Before and during winter weather:
- Please do not park on the street, if possible, when snow is in the forecast so that roads remain clear and open for plows.
- Gather supplies in case you need to stay home for several days without power. Keep in mind each person’s specific needs, including medication. Do not forget the needs of pets. Have extra batteries for radios and flashlights.
- Create an emergency supply kit for your car. Include jumper cables, sand, a flashlight, warm clothes, blankets, bottled water, and non-perishable snacks. Keep the gas tank full.
- Stay off roads. If trapped in your car, stay inside.
- Stay indoors and dress warmly.
- Avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Only use generators and grills outdoors and away from windows. Never heat your home with a gas stovetop or oven.
- Listen for emergency information and alerts.
- Look for signs of hypothermia and frostbite.
- Check on neighbors.

Hurricane and Flood Preparedness
- Elevate critical utilities, such as electrical panels, switches, sockets, wiring, appliances and heating systems.
- Waterproof basements and make sure your sump pump is working. Install a battery-operated backup in case of a power failure.
- Clear debris from gutters and downspouts. Remove anything that could block the flow of water in roadside ditches, including leaves, grass clippings, lawn debris or trash.
- Anchor any fuel tanks.
- Move furniture, valuables, and important documents to a safe place.
- If you know your home or business floods during heavy rains, consider installing a row of sandbags, at least two feet high, around all home and business entrances.
- Park your vehicle on higher ground.
- Secure any outdoor objects that could become airborne during strong hurricane winds, including patio umbrellas, lawn furniture, flower pots, children’s toys, etc.
