UPDATE: All streets impacted by the project are now open to through traffic. Storm drain construction will continue along Church Street in the coming weeks. This work will impact traffic at times, but no further road closures are anticipated.

Contractors began work November 1 on the initial phase of storm drain improvements in the area of Brown, Church and Lucas Streets. This project – which consists of installing storm drains, sanitary sewer pipe, four sanitary sewer manholes and 16 stormwater structures – will help address flooding issues in the area.

The project will require rock removal, which may consist of hammering and/or blasting, and will result in temporary road closures. This initial phase is expected to be complete during summer 2017.

The total project cost for this initial phase is approximately $1 million. The Virginia Department of Transportation is contributing funds through a revenue-sharing grant, with a 50 percent match from the Town. The Town's portion will come from the stormwater utility enterprise fund.

The second phase of storm drain improvements will extend the project area toward Cambria Street and Ellett Road. The Town will be requesting funding for that phase in the upcoming budget cycle. A timeline for construction is not yet set.
