The Town of Christiansburg on Tuesday named Steve Biggs its new town manager.

Biggs, 52, has more than 30 years of experience in town administration and has served almost two decades as the town manager of Clayton, N.C., leading the municipality through a period of unprecedented growth.

When Biggs arrived in Clayton in 1997, the Town had about 6,000 residents and was dealing with significant financial stress. Biggs worked with the Council and staff to implement a transparent and conservative budget philosophy, and today, the Town of Clayton has an annual operating budget of about $45 million, has more than 180 employees and serves more than 19,000 residents.

“Steve comes to us with an impressive background and proven success,” Christiansburg Mayor Mike Barber said. “His prior experience will be an asset, and I was particularly impressed with his views on the value of open government and the importance of community engagement.”

Prior to Clayton, Biggs served four years as town manager in Aberdeen, N.C., and six years as assistant to the town manager and planning director in Wendell, N.C. Biggs is a 1985 graduate of North Carolina State University (NCSU) with a BA in Political Science. He obtained a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from NCSU in 1992.

“Christiansburg has great potential for economic expansion and overall success,” Biggs said. “I love the community’s dedication to quality parks and recreation, and I’m looking forward to focusing on downtown development, particularly supporting small businesses. I am most excited by the energy and vision shown by the Council as I have gotten to know them through this process”

Raised in Fayetteville, N.C., Biggs loves being outdoors and enjoys spending time with his wife, Elissa, and three children.

Christiansburg Town Council began conducting a search for a new town manager after Christiansburg Town Manager Barry Helms announced in December 2015 that he planned to retire in June 2016. Christiansburg Town Council approved Biggs to the position during their May 10 Town Council meeting. Biggs was in attendance.

Biggs’ first day on the job will be July 1, 2016. His salary will be $140,000.
