Benefits for Full-Time Employees

The Town of Christiansburg is pleased to provide our full-time employees with a comprehensive and competitive benefits package. Current benefits include the following:

Medical Insurance

The Town provides a medical care insurance program for its full-time employees, which includes health and dental coverage. Our current medical insurance is provided through Anthem (view the Anthem Keycare 500 plan and Anthem HSA plan), with dental coverage provided by Delta Dental (view Delta Dental coverage). At this time, the Town pays the majority of premiums for individual coverage.

Employee Assistance Program

An Employee Assistance Program is provided for Town employees (full-time, fire/ rescue volunteer) and those family members residing in the same household. This program offers four free professional counseling service visits per year per life occurrence and may be accessed through confidential self-referral.

Employee Leave

Paid Time Off (PTO)

Employees hired on or after January 1, 2014 and covered by the VRS Hybrid Retirement Plan, are enrolled in the Paid Time Off (PTO) Plan.

Paid Time Off is a comprehensive program that recognizes the many diverse needs of employees for time off from work, including vacation, personal time, illness or time off to care for dependents.

Paid Time Off is accrued on the following basis:

  • Less than five years of service: 12 hours per month/ 18 days per year
  • Five-nine years of service: 14 hours per month/ 21 days per year
  • 10-14 years of service: 16 hour per month/ 24 days per year
  • 15-19 years of service: 18 hours per month/ 27 days per year
  • 20 or more years of service: 20 hours per month/ 30 days per year

Annual Leave

Employees hired before January 1, 2014 who have not opted into the VRS Hybrid Retirement Plan are covered under VRS Retirement Plan 1 or Plan 2. All first responders (police, fire, rescue) are also covered under Plan 1 or Plan 2, regardless of date of hire. VRS Plan 1 and Plan 2 employees are eligible to accrue annual leave.

Annual Leave is accrued on the following basis:

  • Less than five years of service: One day per month / 12 days per year
  • Five - 10 years of service: 1.25 days per month /15 days per year
  • 10 or more years of service: 1.5 days per month / 18 days per year

Annual leave can be used for vacation as well as for other personal reasons.

Sick Leave

Full-time employees accrue sick leave at the rate of 1.25 working days per month with unlimited accrual. For the purpose of annual / sick leave sections, a "day" is defined as eight hours. VRS Plan 1 and Plan 2 employees are eligible to accrue sick leave.

Holidays

The Town of Christiansburg follows the State Holiday schedule provided by Virginia Department of Human Resources Management, except for Columbus Day. Columbus Day will be applied as a full day off on the Wednesday preceding Thanksgiving. Payment for any holiday will be forfeited by an employee for an unexcused absence on the last regular workday receding a holiday or the first working day following a holiday. 2018 Holiday Calendar (PDF)

* The Town of Christiansburg follows the Commonwealth of Virginia's holiday calendar for Christmas and New Year's. The most recent calendar included full day holidays for Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.

Retirement - Sick Leave Divestiture

Employees retiring from the Town of Christiansburg and who have a minimum of five years service may withdraw 25% of their accrued sick leave up to a maximum of $10,000 (taxable).

Life Insurance

The Town of Christiansburg provides group life insurance for all full-time employees at no cost to the employee. The amount of life insurance is equal to one year's salary rounded to the nearest $1,000 with double indemnity for accidental death or dismemberment.

Additional life insurance is available at the employee's expense through payroll deduction. Plan design or carrier may be subject to change and employees may contact Human Resources for current information.
